COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

miss gillians class 1966Historical note: Gillian Frances Wimbourne (b. 1936) moved to Boynton Beach in about to establish a dance school after being encouraged by local residents Laura Lee and Ernie Monroe. She taught dance classes in the Boynton Beach/Delray/Palm Beach area for over 25 years in various locations. In 1983, she married musicologist Richard Beattie Davis. In 1986, she closed the Boynton studio and moved to the UK. Her husband collected sheet music published by Belaieff (later housed in the Bodleian Library); after his death in 2008, Miss Gillian has spent a significant effort in promoting the collection. As of 2019, she   resides at least part of the year in the Boynton Beach area.

Scope and content note: Material documenting the Miss Gillian School of Dance includes photographs of children’s dance groups chiefly on stage in costume (c. 1966-1982), dance recital programs, and video and audiotapes of performances. Also included are records of classical music.
