$35,000 Grant Awarded to City Library for Digital Archives Expansion
Boynton Beach’s City Library, in partnership with the Lake Worth Public Library and the Lake Worth Herald Press, was recently awarded a Florida Department of State Library Services and Technology Access grant of $35,000.
The money will be utilized to microfilm, digitize, and create a searchable index of the only known copies of Herald Press issues from 1912-1970. Adding these issues to the city’s archives will enhance South Florida’s digital history. There are currently few pre-1970s newspapers available. Once these old issues are digitized, they will be accessible at the Boynton Beach City Library, and on the City’s website.
“The Boynton Beach City Library considers being a repository for local history a top priority,” according to Library Director Craig Clark. Digitization of historical collections has recently become popular with public library historical collections around the country. Boynton Beach’s City Library has been a leader in the Southeast region to digitize its historical collections, particularly local newspapers.
