Quilters started meeting at the Boynton Beach City Library in October 1979 under the guidance and instruction of Connie Baish, a retired library staff member, who offered to conduct weekly quilting sessions at the library. Sponsored by the Boynton Beach City Library, the Boynton Beach Library Quilters were formed to share quilting information, to educate those wishing to learn the skill, to perpetuate quilting as an art form and cultural expression, to provide a social group with similar interests, and to promote and support the library. Since 1979, the Quilters have met every Thursday morning and created quilts that are sold to the public. All the profits of the quilts have been donated to the library to support quilting collection development, youth programming, and the archives. From 1984 to 2001 an annual quilt show was held at the Boynton Woman’s Club and the proceeds were split between the Womans Club and the library. Since 2001, quilts are displayed and sold in the library year-round.

Arranged chronologically by series. The collection consists of nine series:
Series 1 is information about the Boynton Beach Library Quilters organizational history, and consists of: packets distributed to new quilters (equipment needed, quilting facts, color/design guidelines, planning a project, checklist); notes and correspondence regarding the Quilters participation in forming the Palm Beach County Quilters’ Guild; Proclamation by the City of Boynton Beach in honor of the 10th Quilt Gathering in 1993.
Series 2 consists of bibliographies of Boynton Beach City Library books pertaining to quilting.
Series 3 is correspondence that pertains to the Boynton Beach Library Quilters.
Series 4 consists of member directories with the phone number and mailing address for each quilter.
Series 5 includes loose news clippings about the Boynton Beach Library Quilters and advertisements for the annual Quilt Gatherings.
Series 6 is the Florida History Quilt (96” x 124”). The idea of a quilt representing historical and cultural aspects of Florida was conceived by Grace Pruitt in 1982. Ms. Pruitt, assisted by Virginia Robertson, made all of the pattern drawings. Members worked on the quilt either by making blocks, setting them, or quilting. The quilt is done entirely by hand and uses the techniques of piecing, appliqué, reverse appliqué, trapunto, shadow quilting, leaded glass, and free stitch embroidery. The border is Seminole patchwork in citrus and avocado colors and the sashing color represents the shrimp industry. The design represents natural beauty of the State of Florida, as well as the opportunities in the state: education, sports, industry, business, recreation, and history. It took four years to complete the quilt. Originally, it was to be donated to the Florida State Museum in Tallahassee or to the South Florida History Museum in Miami. However, the Quilters agreed that it should be given to the Boynton Beach City Library to be displayed in the newest library addition, completed in 1986.
In addition to the quilt, the series includes correspondence and press releases about the history and design of the quilt, loan requests for the quilt to be shown in other facilities, and an appraisal for the value of the quilt.
The series also includes The History of the Florida History Quilt, which is a handmade book with the original patterns used for the quilt squares (with each quilter who made the square noted), information regarding the development of the quilt design, and news clippings that inspired the quilt squares.
Series 7 consists of information about the annual quilt shows at the Boynton Woman’s Club, formally called Quilt Gatherings. Included are programs, fliers, vendor information, press releases, lists of door prize winners and quilt voted favorite in each show, accounting records, color slides and photographs of entries and the events. Quilt Gatherings were held annually from 1984 through 1994, then on alternate years in 1996 and 1998. The last Quilt Gathering was held in 2001.
Series 8 includes photographs of the Boynton Beach Library Quilters.
Series 9 includes two scrapbooks.
