Sustainability
The City of Boynton Beach is actively engaged in tackling one of the most significant obstacles of the modern era: climate resilience. The global climate is changing faster than at any time in modern history, presenting growing challenges to human health, quality of life, the economy, and natural systems. Observed evidence demonstrates that this trend can only be explained by the effect of human activities, particularly the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the burning of fossil fuels.
Since 2012, the City of Boynton Beach has supported efforts to combat the threats of climate change, such as extreme heat, sea level rise, and stronger hurricanes, which can have adverse impacts on our community. With the help of partnerships such as the Coastal Resilience Partnership (CRP) of Southeast Palm Beach County, the Southeast Florida Climate Change Compact (Compact), the Southeast Sustainability Directors Network (SSDN), and the Florida Sustainability Directors Network (FSDN), Boynton Beach is committed to accelerating climate action through innovative solutions in resiliency and sustainability.
Sustainability essentially means meeting the needs of the current residents without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Boynton Beach is working towards achieving a balance between environmental stewardship, economic growth, and social responsibility. In 2023, the City adopted the Compact’s Climate Action Pledge (Resolution No. 23-168) to reaffirm the City’s commitment to jointly advancing strategic climate adaptation and mitigation efforts and advancing the implementation of the Regional Climate Action Plan version 3.0 (RCAP 3.0)
Boynton Beach’s long-term sustainability vision:
- Make Boynton Beach a regional and national leader in sustainability through innovative policies, programs, and partnerships.
- Become a leader in energy efficiency and clean energy that comes from sun, wind, or other renewable technologies.
- Create a greener Boynton Beach by enhancing the tree canopy and native plant and animal communities.
- Transform Boynton Beach into a community where people walk, bike, take transit, or carpool for most trips in a safe, accessible, and affordable transportation network.
- Inspire citizen engagement and ensure that the benefits of climate action are shared equitably among all community members.
- Cut GHG emissions in half by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
