Sustainability & Resiliency

Building a Resilient Boynton Beach, Together

The City of Boynton Beach is working to address climate resilience, a growing area of focus for communities worldwide. Changes in climate patterns are influencing public health, daily life, economic stability, and natural systems.

Since 2012, Boynton Beach has supported initiatives to better understand and prepare for climate‑related challenges such as higher temperatures, sea level rise, and more intense storm events. The City collaborates with regional partners, including the Coastal Resilience Partnership of Southeast Palm Beach County, the Southeast Florida Climate Change Compact, the Southeast Sustainability Directors Network, and the Florida Sustainability Directors Network, to advance local and regional resilience and sustainability efforts.

Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of current residents while maintaining the ability of future generations to meet their own. Boynton Beach works toward integrating environmental stewardship, economic development, and social responsibility. In 2023, the City adopted the Compact’s Climate Action Pledge (Resolution No. 23‑168), confirming its intent to participate in collective climate adaptation and mitigation planning and to support implementation of the Regional Climate Action Plan 3.0 (RCAP 3.0).

Resiliency focuses on a community’s ability to prepare for, withstand, and adapt to changing conditions and potential disruptions. In Boynton Beach, resiliency planning includes evaluating local vulnerabilities, supporting infrastructure improvements, and coordinating with regional partners to address factors such as flooding, extreme weather, and shifting environmental conditions. These efforts help ensure that essential services, natural resources, and community assets continue to function effectively over time, even as conditions evolve.

Boynton Beach's Long-term Sustainability and Resiliency Vision:

  • Advancing policies, programs, and partnerships that strengthen Boynton Beach's role as a leader in sustainability and resiliency.
  • Strengthening the resiliency of the City's water utility operations to ensure consistent, reliable, services for all.
  • Reduce risks from climate-related hazards by strengthening preparedness, improving protective infrastructure, and supporting strategies that help safeguard community assets and public safety.
  • Increasing energy efficiency and expanding the use of renewable energy technologies.
  • Enhancing natural environmental by expanding tree canopy coverage and supporting native plant and wildlife habitats.
  • Improving mobility options to support walking, biking, transit use, and carpooling through a safe and accessible transportation network.
